Journal Nine: Pressure (Part Two)

John Barton:

I've always had to be the best because it's been expected of me
(p. 46)

But I don't know what I want to be ... How can I tell my father I don't want to study law if I don't know what else I want to be? (p. 133-34)

Is your situation similar to John's? How? Why? What pressures do you face from your family?

P.E.E.R:
Peter BY Kate Walker

Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself ~ Harvey Firestone.

Discuss how BULLYING is dealt with in Peter by Kate Walker.

  1. I’m in a similar situation to John, as are most children of immigrant parents who’ve come from a poor background. John says, “I've always had to be the best because it's been expected of me,” in some ways this too applies to me. Having had the opportunity to grow up in a great country with great opportunities I am expected by my parents to become rich and successful, the dream nearly all Asian parents have for their kids. The dream of having a son or daughter who will one day become a lawyer or doctor is one that is shared by most parents as well as mine, though they’d rather not admit. As well as this there is a preconceived idea shared by many that says Asians are generally smart so there is a level of expectation I have to live up to. My parents want me to become successful and there is a certain amount of pressure to be successful in different aspects of my life from school, to the career I have but unlike John whose father wants him to study law I still have the option of what I will do in the future.
I’ve never taken the pressure too seriously and in a way kind of enjoy having people push me to doing and being the best I can be. I take the pressure and use it to push myself further.

  2. My situation is similar to John’s situation in terms of the pressure he receives from his father, But I don't know what I want to be ... How can I tell my father I don't want to study law if I don't know what else I want to be? (p. 133-34), I empathise with his current feelings because I get pressured in the same way, all my life my dad has always told me to become something like a doctor or a lawyer, whenever we have a conversation about jobs, he always seems to hint to me to become a lawyer or doctor and I never get to have a say in that, which I dislike, I remember the last conversation I had with him.

Dad: so what do you want to become when you grow up? You know you can be a doctor or a lawyer,Physician, university teacher, pharmacist, electrician so on and so forth.
    Me: ok….

These days there is more pressure on children of my age, especially in high school, I also would not tell my dad that I wouldn’t want a job of such high profession, I know there will be a bit of disappointment, unlike john, he has 0 options available, if he does not study law he will let his family down and especially his father, at the end of the book john suicides, I think the reason for this is because of the pressure that was put on him, pressure these days can do a lot of harmful things to people. But pressure for me is a good thing because it pushes me forward to become the best I can be, and I appreciate someone pushing me, even though they have so many expectations, I lucky enough to have this kind of life in Australia and I am here to make the best out of the life I have.

  3. Bullying?

Bullying is when a person or group is making fun of one person in particular on how they look, what their nationality is, or just because they are having problems themselves. Harvey Firestone quotes “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself”

Bullying is when a person or group of people pick on someone usually younger than them. Bullying can be done in a number of ways whether that is physical, verbal or cyber. I think that many families deal with bullying the wrong way, most of the time the child is either getting told to fight back (by the father), tell someone (by the mother) or we end up just bottling it up inside of us. This is shown in the book ‘Peter’ by Kate Walker.

In the book ‘Peter’ the youngest son Peter is getting told by his father and mother how to deal with bullying, his father told him (being the more violent person in the family) “You should have flattened the first bloke who said anything”. But on the other hand his mother has told him (being the more sensible person in the family) “Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things”

This is happening in most families because the father wants his son to toughen up but the mother wants him to handle it appropriately. Bullying causes kids to do irrational things and can cause them to hurt themselves. The bullies can know what the victim is feeling because they often get mistreated and abused at home.

All in all bullying is not something that should be taught to be dealt with by physical actions but by telling someone like a teacher. We should encourage the children to deal with their problems responsibly.

  4. My situation is pretty much exactly the same but my parents don’t expect me to study law, my parents expect that I get over 90% in every test. My dad wants me to be good in school because he didn’t have the resources and facilities that I have so he wants me to take advantage of them
The pressures I face from my family are to succeed in every single test, sport and anything that involves competition. They want me to place first in every subject, be the best player in every sport even if I’m playing it for the first time.

  5. My situation is nowhere near Johns. Now, I’m not going to be a hypocrite and say my parents don’t want me to be successful and rich, but, they are happy with me doing what I want to do as long as I benefit from it and get something out of it. I’m not going to say either I don’t want my kids to have a rich and successful job but I think it’s a tendency for parents to want their kids to be some big hotshot lawyer or a big doctor but I have the dream of being the head chef at my own restaurant on the harbour. My parents know there is a slim chance of this happening and I do to but if I came home tomorrow and said to my mum ‘I want to be a lawyer’ she’s going to be upset and she will try and change my mind to be what I want to be and that’s why I can rest easy and know I can be what I want and have my parents, friends and family behind me all the way.

  6. My situation is similar to John’s as are many kids because everyone wants their child to succeed in life. John quotes “I’ve always had to be the best because it’s been expected of me. This statement applies to me in an extent because my parents want me to do great in everything I attempt. The expectations of my parents for me is to get A’s in all subjects, the reason why my parents want me to do good in school is because there options were more limited back then but for me I have the option to become whatever I desire. That is one of the best qualities about this country, my dad always tells me I don’t care what you study as long as you get in to university. The pressures I face from my family are to do well in school; John’s dad had put so much pressure on him which made him commit suicide. I find pressure like a challenge to see how hard I can push myself to reach a goal but in John’s case he had too much pressure put on him and he couldn’t handle it.

  7. My situation is nowhere near John's situation due to the fact that my parents don't expect me to become something they want me to be. My parents want me to strive to be the best i can and being able to support my ,future, wife and kids. The pressure i face from my family is being pressured into striving even further.

  8. A thesis (statement) is your take on the topic. So instead of everyone talking about bullying, you'll discuss your position/perception of bullying.

Think of it being your opinion WITHOUT using first person language.

  9. John Barton is being pressured because his father wants him to be like him even though it would be a hard journey. He then had a depression and commited suicide.

My situation is similar to John's. Being pressured to do things you can't do is stressing. This is like my parents telling me to get A's on ALL my subjects. It is possible, but is too hard to do. Another example could be teachers forcing you to do so much homework for one day even though there are other subjects to do homework for.

  11. Bullying:

Bullying is when a person is being harassed or annoyed by one person, or, many people. The limits to bullying have no end can go from a simple note, to, someone’s bones being broken. Bullying can stretch from a small reason like and imperfection to a person’s personal problems. Bullying should never be taken lightly and this is defined even better by Harvey Firestone “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself”

Bullying is a problem not looked at much at home and when it is it is most of the time dealt with wrong. This fact is proven perfectly by the book ‘Peter’ by Kate Walker. The book deals with the fact that most homes have the stereo typical solutions to bullying like the mother saying to deal with the problem by talking and the dad saying to fight!

The book is about a boy named peter that is being harassed by some boys and doesn’t want to talk about it. When asking what to do his father said “You should have flattened the first bloke who said anything”. This would not be the proper way to solve it but will give others the chance for revenge and could get someone hurt. The more responsible and respectable solution would be to tell someone. Peter’s mother says “Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things.” This is the more noble and smart decision.

So with saying that i think the more responsible and better way out is to tell someone like a teacher or parent so that they can solve with words and not have someone end up in hospital over a small dispute like rules in a game or in peter’s case telling some boys the law.

  12. My situation is smiliar to John due to my asian parents are strict. They expect me to get a good job , be the best and be successful in the future. Although i dont do my homework or study, my mum pressures me by giving me lecture or telling me off. In John saying 'But I don't know what I want to be ... How can I tell my father I don't want to study law if I don't know what else I want to be? (p. 133-34)' My mum doesnt care what i do as long as it is good and im happy what i am doing.

  13. Bullying is the abuse someone physically and/or verbally because of various reasons like looks, nationality and race.

In the book ‘Peter’ the main character Peter is getting told by his father and mother how to deal with bullying. His father told him (using the more old-school rules ) “You should have flattened the first bloke who said anything”. But on the other hand his mother (Lynn) has told him (being the more sensible and reasonable person in the family) “Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things”

This is happens in some families because the father wants his son to toughen up and "act like a man" but the mother wants him to handle it appropriately and reasonably. Bullying can cause kids to do irrational things and in some cases things like suicide.

  14. My situation is similar to John’s as are many kids because parent want their children to succeed in life.

John quotes “I’ve always had to be the best because it’s been expected of me. This statement applies to me in a way because my parents want me to do great in everything I attempt. The expectations of my parents for me is to do good in everything, the reason why my parents want me to do good in everything especially school is because there are more options than my parents had growing up.

This is one of the best qualities about this country, you can be anything you want to be.

The pressures I face from my family are to do well in school and achieve in life. Some kids are pushed and pressured so hard that they can even commit suicide.

  15. In John Barton Situation of being an is similar to my situations in life. His been experiencing his family telling him off about what to do in his career whether his happy or not.John Barton's father wants him to study law which he says its not fair for his life and it is just like that that his father controls the way he is and who he is.

He parents always wanted the best of him,my parents expect me to be the best, example my parents except me to get nothing in Cs and All A's but they want the best.My sisters care more about my grades and have experienced what the HSC and high school education life and have been stressing me out about school and expected me to always come first in the grade and say if I don't I might fail my career. My parents as typical Asian family and sisters expect me to be a lawyer, doctor, working in the business or being anything partly of medical science or say that I might as well as fail life.

I would always want my own life responsible so my life can be happy and unique and not be plain boring and suicidal.John should reach out to his parents saying what he wants to do in HIS life not theirs.Parents controlling you is having them under their nest 24.7 including at school.Parents letting you do anything and being happy is having the freedom and relaxing and not stressful as it is.Being an Asian is stressful at times in education and career jobs.John Barton experience the same situations and would like to do something else in his life.

  16. Bullying is the abuse (mentally, physically or cyber)to another because of their race, religion, looks, weight, size or height. Harvey Firestone defines it as Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.

In the novel 'Peter' by Kate Walker, Peter is a kid facing the challenge of being bullied by kids from his school, who call him a f@gg%t. As any child would, Peter is embarrassed to discuss this issue with his separated parents and tries to avoid the conversation coming up or being absent from the conversation. However his parents discuss the issue at the dinner table and as would expected Peter is embarrassed and keeps hushed about it. His father Bob, who can be described as old-school or old-fashioned comes up with the solution to beat up or fight the bully face to face by saying "“You should have flattened the first bloke who said anything”, however his mother Lynn has a more subtle and quiet solution, meaning that he should confront the bully and talk out the problem by saying that “Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things”.

In these situations, parents become overprotective and worried for their children (so they should be), but this can cause more stress for the child because they fell that everyone is on their back and too much stress can lead to depression which may lead to suicide. This is and ongoing problem in today's society. But should be dealt with carefully and responsibly.

John Barton had the pressure by his father to excel in all his studies and be successful in politics like his father was. But John doesn't want to be a politician, but can't find a way to tell him or how he might react, leading John to be in a lot of pressure and stress causing a suicidal death.

I am lucky in a way that i don't have to become what my parents are, but i do have the expectation of being successful at whatever i want to do. my parents want me to excel in everything so that i can have my options open to choose whatever i want to be and i know in the end what i want to do they will be happy and proud of me

  18. I've always had to be the best because it's been expected of me (p. 46)

But I don't know what I want to be ... How can I tell my father I don't want to study law if I don't know what else I want to be? (p. 133-34)

Is your situation similar to John's? How? Why? What pressures do you face from your family?

Yes I have similar situations in which I overcome majority of the time. Every Single Parent expects their Child to go to Uni and have a great career. But all we do is say it is impossible and that we must become doctors or lawyers. However we never question WHY our parents tell us this and also why we don't explore our experiences and draw out comes that may be beneficial and lead us to live a prosperous life.

WHY? There is one simple answer to this question and it involves mainly reputation and future standard of living. The statement evokes in our minds why our parents really do this and it often involves their reputation; every single parent wants their child to have a comfortable living style as they grow up in the near future, Parents want their child to exceed them in their life, all parents want their children to live a good, no, fabulous life and lots of parents expose to their children that they would be proud with them if they exceed them because of course its their child.

Empathising in John Barton's situation, I would go to the extent of committing suicide as my life balance is equal to how I want to live it as his wasn't. The main quality that John lacked was courage and bravery; he was afraid to tell his dad he had no interest in law which lead him to a blocked mind of worry that impacted his life in all different areas which lead him to confess the above. If John had told his father that it wasn't in his interest to study law it might have put is dad in distress but it would’ve relieved John about his worries and wouldn’t have made such an impact on his life and the affect of not doing this.

  19. I have similar situations to John however deal with them in different manner such as arranging my ethics of what I want to learn and sharing them with my parents. If I had come to a decision like John that I didn't know what I was going to do then I would ask for help so I can experience different types of careers that will help make a decision. My parents tell me to study hard so I achieve hard which I do but no one can be on their A-game as in your life you will manage to stop what you’re doing and stop everything just to relax; Even though you may think someone is the SMARTEST intellect their not, you can take them down, but it take practise and skill which the other has already adopted. You are what you want to be and if no one likes it 'tough' because you can't be forced into something you don’t want to do (John Barton - Situational Problem). Then you get the idea if that I temporarily relax and get off your game the other Intellectual will defeat you, you are WRONG because the other intellectual will go through this phase themselves; you might have your doubts but believe it because no one is a machine.

The only pressure I may face from my family is the future education situation and that I know i'm going to achieve but in some difficult in an up-down like situation. I will overcome difficult with any advice from family and take different measures to what I need to help me succeed.

  20. PART 2
Bullying experiences may not be shared with parents depending on the child’s relationship with his parents; a child will never talk to his/hers parents unless a good relationship is established, peter has a choice of violence or to do the right thing, such as talking to a counsellor, the better alternative is to listen to his mother and not his father’s silly nonsense, the extract deals with the fact that most households have the stereo typical resolution to bullying, an example of this is when peters mother advices him to deal with it the proper way while on the other hand, his father encourages him to revert to violence.
One may think that the better alternative is to respond in a violent way, while another may realise that the safe and mature way is to speak to someone you trust such as a school counsellor and parents to try and prevent bullying – otherwise the consequences may be severe.

  21. Bullying is when someone gets hurt by verbal, physical or cyber actions.Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself (Harvey Firestone)

Bullying is a big problem.Kids getting hurt or sad and Parents are telling them to Stand up for yourself or have comment sense by telling the teacher.‘Peter’ by Kate Walker is a book that deals with bullying,it tells us to Fight(Father), Being reasonable(Mother) or do nothing.

The book 'Peter' is about a boy named Peter who was told by his father 'Bob' to fight back. 'Because of you silly ...A man act on his own' and his mother 'lynn' told him be more sensible. 'Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things'

I think that it is more wise to let the teacher or parents to handle the situation, so that nothing bad will occur.

  22. My situation is similar to John because my family wants the best of me in every aspect of life. They want me to do well in school with my studies and then worry about sport. Sometimes this can be hard as you can get sick of schoolwork at times and want to have fun by playing a sport or Xbox. My family wants this from me because they grew up in villages in Macedonia and did not have the same opportunities as there would be in the city. This is probably the main reason that they want me to strive for success to get a good job.

  23. The situation John Barton is facing is very similar to my own experiences with pressure and my parent's expectations. As John says "I've always had to be the best because it's been expected of me" is exactly what what I am thinking. My parents have a high expectation for me to not only succeed in school but also life. My parents push me to do my best because they know from their own expereinces that if I have a better education many more doors in my future will open and I will have many opportunities to succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bullying is when someone hurts another person’s feelings, or is when someone picks on someone verbally, physically or via cyber. Harvey Firestone’s quote says ‘Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.’ This quote tells us if you’re getting bullied do something because if you don’t do anything it’ll continue.

Bullying could happen to anyone, big or small. Bullying could also happen anywhere, it usually happens at school to show power, show off or to insult people. I happened to be bullied once or twice, and the way I countered it was to use his own words against himself.

The extract ‘Peter by Kate Walker’ talks about a boy, called Peter being called a ‘poof’ and getting bullied. He feels vulnerable and embarrassed because of his parents talking about his situation, and he can’t do anything about it.

The text shows how Peter is getting bullied and his parents are arguing about it. Both his mum and dad has 2 different opinions, his dad is old school and violent. As shown by the quote in the text

‘ Because of your silly airy-fairy nonsense about working things out and taking things over. That’s not the way a man acts.’
His dad results to violence as the first resort, and starts a fight saying this is how ‘a man acts.’

Peter’s mum on the other hand is way different. She is very sensible and reasonable, always being lenient to her kids. In the text, his mum says...

‘That’s right Bob; Mum said. ‘Young people invariably attack each other’s sexuality. It’s their most vulnerable point.'

This proves how his mum is actually very carefree and easy on her kids, but very reasonable. Unlike, Peter’s dad, his mum does not result to violence as the first resort. This quote shows how Peter’s mum doesn’t really think this is a big issue, and cares more on proving her ‘divorced husband’ wrong.

Overall, I think bullying is a big issue, and can cause major damage to some people. Bullying could lead to all sorts of things e.g. suicide. As shown in this text, Peter’s mum and dad doesn’t really know anything about bullying, and Peter cannot do anything to the bullies either because he is scared or feels vulnerable.

  25. Journal Nine: Pressure (Part Two)

    John Barton:

I've always had to be the best because it's been expected of me (p. 46)

But I don't know what I want to be ... How can I tell my father I don't want to study law if I don't know what else I want to be? (p. 133-34)

Is your situation similar to John's? How? Why? What pressures do you face from your family?

My situation is pretty similar to John’s. Although I am not from a rich family, my family always pressures me on doing well on all my tests. They want me to be the best of the best; an example of this is when I got an A for my tests. Like any other Asian parent, they say it’s just expected of me and they say keep up the good work.

Overall, even though my parents pressure me, they want me to have a good future. Not to be lying on the streets begging for money, but the complete opposite. Sitting on a comfy chair, in my own office with air condition relaxing and watching other people work.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bullying is deliberately harming someone in a physical or non- physical way. It is considered as something very serious. Harvey Firestone states, “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.”

In the story of Peter, bullying is dealt in two different ways that are shown by his parents. Peter finds himself being harassed by students at his school. Peter brought the problem up during dinner, but wasn’t comfortable about telling it to his parents who were divorced. Both of his parents had each had a solution to the problem. His father, Bob thought violence was the solution to the problem. This is shown when he said, “You should have flattened the first bloke who said anything.’’ His mother, Lynn is more sensible about the dealing with the problem. Peter’s mother said, “Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things.” She believed that the problem could end if it is dealt sensibly rather than in a physical, violent why like what Bob had said to Peter.
Peter gets these two different ways of how to deal with bullying is probably because his father is a man and his mother is a woman. Males deal with these problems or issues in a more manly way, females are more sensible and are more non violent.

  28. Bullying is when a person or group invades an individual's comfort zone, either to tease them, make fun of them or just be plain rude to them. Harvey Firestone quotes "Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself."

Bullies usually pick on kids younger than them due to the fact that they are stronger and bigger. Bullying can be done in a number of ways, physical, verbal or cyber(in today's modern world). In my own personal opinion I think that many families that have sons that are bullied deal with it in many different ways, a father might act toughly and tell the son to hit the kid back while a nother mgiht have more common sense and will talk to the parent't mother or a teacher(if occuring on school grounds). This typical scenario is shown in the book "Peter" by Kate Walker.

In the book Peter there is a boy named Peter who is being lectured by his father and mother on how to deal with bullying. His afather and mother bith have different views on how to handle bullying. His father reacted to his situation by telling Peter "You should have flattened the first bloke who said anything." His mother siad "Our boys are intelligent and well-informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things."

Overall all types of bullying is bad and no young child should have to deal with it. In my personal opinion all of today's modern families will have different views on bullying and how to deal eith it.

  29. The term Bullying is meant being insulted, harassed or being a victim of someone doing something to you that is making you feel sad and angry.A person can invade to you and they can be more powerful that you. They can call you names and worst doing bad pranks saying its a joke.

Peter dealing with bullying is trying to get out of things and not be in peoples ways. Not being a victim of anything is the way of staying out of bullying.Dont let anyone go to your life and bully you so you be weaker and looking sad.Being the bullying victim makes you weak and invulnerable. In peter way he asks he parents on how to deal with bullies.Bullies are like people who want power like Hitler but have problems on his own like Hitler hating Jews.People who want power but have problems of their own are likely to be bullies.Peter ask his parents,His dad responses to being violent and bashing the bully up while his mother is telling the opposite and calm down and ignore the bully.

Overall,Bullies should be left alone yet most likely they have problems of their own or Karma will get them for bullying an innocent victim.Dealing with bullying is different on your nationality, behavior and personality.

  30. Bullying is when someone teases a person or has invaded their comfort zone. Harvey Firestone quotes "Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself."
Bullies normally bully kids that are smaller than them because they feel superior or more powerful. There are number of ways how a person can bully someone for example: Physical, Verbal or now in our modern world cyber bullying which has become one of the most common types of bullying. My personal opinion about bullying is that many children deal with bullying in some form. A father would tell the son to man up and hit the kid back but a mother would talk to the child’s parents who are bullying their son to resolve the problem or the mother would tell a teacher at the school. This scenario is clearly shown in the book “Peter” by Kate Walker.
This book is about a boy named Peter who is being told by his father and mother about how to deal with bullying. His father and mother have very different views on how Peter should deal with his problem. Peter’s father tells Peter to hit the person back and man up. While Peter’s mother reacts to Peter’s problem by telling him to act sensible and not to result to violence.
My final opinion on the matter of bullying is that no child should ever go through bullying because it can haunt a person for the rest of their life depending on how severe they have been bullied.

  31. Bullying is when you get teased or wen you tease someone and it has affected you/them deeply physically or mentally. Harvey Firestone quotes "never be bullied into silence, never allow yourself to be made a victim, accept noones definition of your life but define yourself."
In the book "Peter" bullying is dealt in 2 different ways in the family. Peter's mum says to confront the bullies and talk to them about it and to make them stop. Whilst Peter's dad says take a physical approach and punch them if they call him names such as gay.
Personally, I feel that Peter should confront them and tell them to stop, I don't find physical abuse to stop bullies any good, because than you will become the person you hate, a bully.

  32. Bullying can be described as being abused or treated in a bad way. Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself ~ Harvey Firestone. In the story Peter is being bullied by a bunch of kids and his mother and father are talking to him about what has been going on. Bullying is a topic most of us can relate to. We’ve all dealt with bullies and while some think it’s just a part of growing up, there isn’t a place for bullying anywhere, from within school to the wider community.
Everyone has their own perceptions and ideas of what bullying is and how to handle it. There are those who try to confront and deal with bullying by talking to those around them and the bullies themselves while there are those who believe in a more violent approach to the problem of bullying.
“Because of your airy-fairy nonsense about working things out and talking things over......” this is the statement made by Peter’s father Bob. Peter’s says, “our boys are intelligent, they’re well informed...” Both parents have very different ideas regarding bullying. Taken from the text Peter by Kate Walker, these two statements show the difference in opinion many people have to bullying.
Both have very different views on how to deal with Peter’s bullying problem, one in a calm reasonable and sensible way and one in a more hands on approach. We can tell he is a very tough, authoritative, old school and possibly violent man. He believes in an ‘old school’ approach to dealing with bullies while Lynn believes in a less violent way of dealing with the problem. Both have very different opinions on how to deal with a problem like this and most people do. There are many who still believe the only way to deal with a bully is with a fist and then there are those who believe problems are better resolved with words. Most children have heard these same views in the home with their own parents.
Everyone has their own ideas to do with dealing with bullies and these two parents represent the two very different views and although different people have different views all agree, like Peter’s Parents, it is something that should be dealt with not tolerated. There isn’t a place for bullying anywhere

  33. Does ‘Modern Family’ accurately represent YOUR family? How? Why?

There are 3 families in the sitcom ‘Modern Family’ these are Jay, Gloria and Manny; Cameron, Mitchell and Lily; Claire, Phil, Haley, Alex and Luke.

My family is accurately represented by ‘Modern Family’ but only by the Dunphy which has Claire, Phil, Haley, Alex and Luke. The reason my family is accurately represented by this family is because although I have only one brother, my family argues and has its disagreements but we also have the moments when we just want to be with each other and no one else just like the Dunphy family.

My family is also unlike Dunphy family because I don’t have the same uncles or grandfather as the kids in the Dunphy Family. The Dunphy family is a family that does most things together whereas my family does basically nothing together and doesn’t even sit down to eat dinner together which the Dunphy does do.

The reason my family does not does any of the above is because my dad is always working and my mum is also working, so my mum cooks me and my brother some dinner and then goes to work. My mum then finishes then eats her dinner while we are watching TV, my dad comes home as brother is going to bed and he eats his dinner while I am watching TV then I have a shower and go to bed and he watches TV.

The reason my family spends time when it does is because we have to and we do it at times like Christmas and Public holidays when we are all stuck at home because we have nothing to do. We also spend time on birthdays and when we do that we just sit around and don’t do much.

  34. For the Josphine Alibrandi response we pick 3 journal topics, does this mean we have to write three separate responses or is it all in one?

  35. Bullying is annoying and harassing someone to get a response. The bully usually have their own problems and take out their anger and frustration on other people. Bullying is a bad thing to do because it could lead to problems for the victim. Harvey Firestone quotes “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself”. This is right because you shouldn’t worry what other people think of you but what you think of yourself.

Bullying can be done by using strength or size differnce to intimidate the weaker or smaller person.
In the book by Kate Walker, the main character Peter is getting bullied. His mum and dad have different opinions in the way Peter should work the problem out. His father says in response to trying to solve it by talking “ That’s not the way a man does things, he acts”. His mother on the other hand says “Our boys are intelligent…to these things”
Peters father wants him to work out the issue by using physical violence while his mother wants him to work it out smartly and without violence. They have two completely different opinions. This is the same in life as the victim and bully usually have different views because they are in different positions.
Bullying is bad for the victim and the bully. Victims should always believe what they think and not the bully.

  36. Bullying is deliberately harming someone in a physical or non- physical way.Harvey Firestone quotes “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself”

Peter gets these two different ways of how to deal with bullying is probably because his father is a man and his mother is a woman. Males deal with these problems or issues in a more manly way, females are more sensible and are more non violent.

Bullying is when a person is being abused in any form. In Harvey Firestone's word, “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself". This means that don't just be a bystander or victim, speak up, stand up for yourself. Remember that no one can judge you, only you can judge yourself.

Parents often are affected when their child is being bullied. In the novel 'Peter' by Kate Walker, a boy named Peter is being bullied by other kids. Peter doesn't anyone else to get involved, especially his parents. His parents though were suspicious and forced him to speak up. When they found out, they tried to help him. His father tried a more violent method, “because of your silly airy fairy nonsense about talking things out and working things over. That's not the way a man does things. A man acts". His mother tries a more sensible way, “Our boys are intelligent, they're well informed. I trust them to have a sensible attitude to these things". This is an evidence that Parents wants to get involved with their child/ren 's problems.

  39. In defintion, bullying to me is hurting someone in way you will regret or not regret. I've been the bully and I've been the victim. Bullying is not an easy situationto overcome because of how it has affected you in a way that you feel weak. One of the text studied in class "Peter",written by Kate Walker, clearly demonstrates what it feels like to be the bully and what it feels like to be left outside the box.

Peter is an individual who is embarrassed and vulnerable towards his family, telling them the news that he was getting bullied. In this sense, we feel a sense of pathos because he is in a difficult position to overcome the problem. This is shown through the quote " Nothing's been going on". This is an example of where Peter is hiding his feelings and not opening it up towards his family.

Vince on the other hand is weak and encourages Peter. Vince is very reasonable and understands the situation Peter is going through. This is also known as "empathy". This is shown through the quote " Or he might wanted to handle it on his own".

Bob is very pessismistic towards Peter's scenario, he doesn't understand what peter's going through. The quote, " Because of your silly bloody airy fairy nonsense about working things out and talking things out ' shows that he is very negative'.

Lynn, is very reasonable and sensible character because she feels sympathy for him and it is positive that all individuals can solve things out. This is shown through the quote " Our boys are intelligent to see things".

  40. My situation is similar to John's because they want me to be the best at everything i do and everything they put me in. From school to sport they expect me to be 1st place, they see no reason why we should even fail any test considering all the resources and facilities at our disposal. My parents always remind us how they got good grades back in Tonga and they didn't have the same resources as us. Besides all that they only pressure me to have a good job, a job that doesn't require manual labor, so thats why they want me to be the best in everything so i can get the best and easiest job.

  41. Bullying is when a person or a group of people may be insulted either physically or verbally. The bullying usually occurs due to personal experiences and often they bully people to get a response out of them. If you see bullying in action DO NOT be a bystander and do nothing because than you are just as worse as them.

An extract from the book that we read[Peter by Kate Walker] Peter is having dinner with his two parents and older brother all discussing his bullying problem. His father who believes in the old 'knuckle sandwich' when someone badmouths you believes that Peter should pump any person who treats him bad, while his mother, more 'sticks n stones' person, believes that a understanding should be made between bully and victim through VERBAL DISCUSSION not physical. But while they argue his case Peter feels frustrated and angry.
