Classwork: Monday 8th November

You need to complete the following three activities by next lesson. If by some chance you complete these before the end of the lesson, you may choose to begin preparations for the review section of your exam; which is next week.

1) Complete your summary report. Whilst this should have been completed for H/W over the weekend, I would anticipate that there would be some of you who may benefit from the extra class time given.

2) Complete a journal on the following topic. DESTINY. Josie states that we are "masters of our own destiny" yet Lee disagrees, stating that "if your father's a dustman, you're going to be a dustman and if your father's filthy rich, you're going to be because he'll introduce you to his rich friend's son/daughter" (p. 144). How true is this in your family life?

3) Complete a journal on the following topic. LEADERSHIP. Sister Louise (p. 181) states "I know what came over you. You decided to become a sheep for the day, Josephine. You weren't a leader. You were a follower. You'll never amount to anything if you can be so easily influenced."
To what is Sister Louise referring? How does what she says apply to your own life?

Just a reminder too that these (as well as the previous three LFA journals) will be examined.

  3. When Lee states that your future will be similar to your parents or past generations, I would have to disagree. Even though there is a chance that you will end up rich, because your parents are rich or poor because you are poor does not mean you will stay like that for the rest of your life. Seeing as you have a mind of your own and you control what you do yourself, you can either conform to what your parents expect you to do and follow their path or strive for your own goals. Eventually if you strive hard enough in work and thought, you have a better chance to succeed.
I have seen many people come from poor families and grow up to be rich and successful, and many people from rich families grow up to be poor (but in good way). For example saints even though they grow up rich, they choose to help the needy by donating all their money and earning their life in good deed. Li Cunxin in the novel Maos Last Dancer did not expect his life to turn out any other way, experienced a whole other life only because he persevered, he went out and worked as hard as he could to become a great ballet dancer and eventually write a best-selling novel about himself.
Though people can have negative thoughts on the way (mostly students...such as me) we cannot give up hope! (This is so cheesy...) There are obstacles in the way and we can either be “water” and find a way around them (hehe... NINJA) or be “rock” and barge right through them with a great mindset.
Either way, this is just another battle of life, with many more to come.

  4. Sister Louise was referring to peer pressure. A force that is so powerful that it can cause many students to horrible things that they would not have ever imagined themselves doing. On that day Josie went truanted from the walkathon abandoning her “honour” and reputation she immediately knew that she was disobeying the school. Likewise, every time student do something wrong we know it deep inside of us but we experience that sense of “feel great”, “break the rules” sensation and at that moment never think about what is going to happen to us... Like me, every time I rebelled against a teacher I always thought to myself that i do not want to grow up in a forced life or a life that makes me follow orders. But that is life, not just school. It is work and it is just better to keep our mouths shut, I mean all hope is not lost, there are people out there to help us from major problems that therapists can handle to simple school matters like bullying or “teacher abuse” =P that a year co-ordinator can handle. But the problem is... only some of us will muster enough courage to seek help.

  5. Destiny

This is not at all true to my family because my mum is a hairdresser and I have no interest in being a hairdresser and I hate touching other peoples hair. My dad is an IT man who has travels over the world to fix their computers; I also have no interest in fixing computers. So I would have to disagree with Lee when she says your parent’s profession is what you will be because I want to be something completely different to both my parents.

  6. Leadership

Sister Louise is referring to the fact that Josie is following other people and what they do instead of taking an initiative and do what she wants. This doesn’t really apply to my life because I always want to do my own thing and I am very stubborn when it comes to following people, I like it when people follow me and when they do what I want. I am not bossy I just like it when people do it my way instead of theirs because often my way is the best.

  7. What Josie says about destiny is true because you can be anything you want to be and not whatever your father or one if your family members are as Lee states. There have been many stories of people who were poor rising up and becoming superstars whether in sport or business. If your father has a bad job it does not necessarily mean that you are going to have a bad job as well because your father would tell you how important it is to study and get a good job and not be like him, the same with your mother or any other family member. If you put your mind to it you can do anything.

  8. Destiny

I disagree when Lee says that whatever your parents are that is what your destiny would be. i believe that you should be whatever makes you happy and willing to work. Just because my dad's a sales person doesn't mean I will, although things like money may make a difference to their child's profession, this doesn't necessarily mean people need to follow their family's history. Be what you want to be not what others want you to be. It is destiny for you to choose your own path and not someone else's

  9. I agree with josie's statement and disagree with Lee's statement.
This is not at all true to my family because my mum sells designer kids clothing whilst my dad is a carpentar. Although i like wood there might be a chance of me working with my dad if i choose to but then again it can all change.

When Sister Louise states "I know what came over you. You decided to become a sheep for the day, Josephine. You weren't a leader. You were a follower. You'll never amount to anything if you can be so easily influenced". I know that people can be easily influenced by peer pressure and Josie was influenced to jig the walk-a-thon with the juniors to go to a hotel and meet a celebrity with friends when she had the responsibility to supervise these kids. She didn't show courage to stand up and say no, which is what a leader should do. In my life, I am here to do what I believe is correct and will not take orders that is what i will live for forever

  12. When Josie states that we are "masters of our own destiny" and Lee counters the statement saying yet Lee disagrees, stating that "if your father's a dustman, you're going to be a dustman and if your father's filthy rich, you're going to be because he'll introduce you to his rich friend's son/daughter".
This in relation to my family is not true. Because my parents will let me get any job that I want I am not restricted to do whatever my mum or dad’s job is. Also when Lee says ‘’if your father's filthy rich, you're going to be because he'll introduce you to his rich friend's son/daughter" this is not true because no matter who you are if you work hard you too could become successful

How true is this in your family life?

Josie and Lee both make statements on the subject of destiny, contrasting each other, Josie arguing that a person makes his/her own destiny and Lee stating that your destiny is set by the family and the life that you are born into. I do believe that we make our own destiny and not that when we’re born our life paths are set in stone. My dad has had a variety of jobs including steel mill, paramedic, green loans assessor, and motel worker and both of my brothers have taken different paths in life. My oldest becoming an electrician, and the other a butcher, thus proving that Lee’s statement about destiny, ‘If your father is a dustman then you’ll be a dustman...’ isn’t true. Although Lee’s opinion may very well be the case in some situations, in those situations the child always could have done something differently, they always had the choice.

To what is Sister Louise referring? How does what she says apply to your own life?
Sister Louise is referring to peer pressure, the thing about peer pressure is that you are forced to do what others want you to do, Josie did the wrong thing by jigging school but she only did it so she couldn’t destroy her reputation in front of her friends, such as being “cool”, Josie knew what she was doing was wrong, but she decided to get pressured, in life you can either choose to do the right or wrong, no one can make you do the wrong, if you do wrong you do it for yourself, no one else can be blamed for it but you. I have experienced similar situations to Josie in my life, but I always choose to do what I think is right.

Sister Louise is referring to the incident of Josie and her friends leaving the walk-a-thon and the group of student she was in charge of in a “developing and upcoming” area. Sister Louise gives a large deal of things to Josie to think about and the main point that Sister Louise stressed about was responsibility.

In my life I think that I could show some more responsibility in that I need to be more committed to school, I need to discipline myself and be responsible in making the right decisions.

I agree with Josie’s statement that “we are masters of our destiny’’, but disagree with Lee’s statement-“if your father's a dustman, you're going to be a dustman and if your father's filthy rich, you're going to be because he'll introduce you to his rich friend's son/daughter.” This is because it depends on the person. For example if my dad is a builder it doesn’t mean that I will be one as well. My parents allow me to make my own decision about what job I want to do as long as it generates enough money to live and that I am happy about it.

An example of this is Li Cunxin, he worked from bitter poverty to a happy and successful life, his family was so poor that couldn't afford enough food to feed the whole family, but because he kept his dream alive and put a lot of effort, his life was a success. This reminds me of the story he heard about a frog who was born into a deep well, the frog wanted to escape his life but he couldn't because the walls were too high. Li referred to himself as the frog and promised himself he will get out of the 'well' (his current life), and in the end he was able to achieve his goals and live a normal life.

  19. DESTINY

I strongly disagree with Lee’s opinion about destiny and I definitely agree with what Josie says. I don’t believe our destiny has already been decided. I agree that my family, friends and the people I meet will shape the person I become but I don’t think the career I will one day have will have been decided for me by fate. I am the son of a watch and shoe repairer and a housewife/cashier, and I can say with absolute confidence I will be neither when I grow up. There are those who will be pushed and pressured jobs, such as the children of the wealthy but even they have a choice. I know that that my parents want me to one day become successful and happy, and though they don’t say this very often they want me to have the things and opportunities they never could. This is why I want to do well and make my parents proud.
But in the end my destiny is still mine and I believe we are all “masters of our own destiny"

  20. I think that what josie says is definetly true we are "masters of our destiny", because i want to be a chef not a engineer like my dad because it is not my intrest and i have my family behind me. Lee though is definetely wrong and in my opinion has to be more optimistic.

  21. LEADERSHIP
Sister Louise refers to Josie as becoming a sheep for the day because she did not act of her own accord but what the people around her were doing which is what sheep do. Josie was influenced by peer pressure because at the start she did not want to go along with Sera, Anna and Lee but she let herself get carried away by her friends feelings. It is important to be a leader and not always listen to what other people want to do but think clearly about what you yourself want to do and not others.

  22. Sister Louise is referring to the fact that Josie skipped the walk-a-thon to go with her friends to the city because her friends were going. This can apply to my life and others my age because lots of people see someone smoking and drinking and are told its cool and will then do it to blend in with the crowd.

  23. DESTINY
I strongly agree with Josie's statement "We are masters of our own destiny" because if we put our mind to it we can accomplish anything we want to. If you have a positive attitude and the right mind set you can become as successful as you want. In my family life, my father owns his very own business, I want to follow in his footsteps and own a company but in a different area of business than my father.

You'll never amount to anything if you can be so easily influenced." she is referring to peer pressure and how anyone can be persuaded to do stuff they are not used to doing, like Josie jiging the walk-a-thon to go out with her friends. Josie drops her standards of being a leader (farmer) and following the pack (sheep). In my own life I will always make the right decisions and follow the rules and laws of pur community.

“You decided to become a sheep for the day, Josephine. You weren't a leader. You were a follower. You'll never amount to anything if you can be so easily influenced." Sister Louise is referring to how Josie was persuaded so easily by Sera to break the rule, and leaving school to see the lead singer of a band while neglecting her responsibilities to the children. This does apply to me because having friends there is often at different times, such as when going out. During these times it was good to have a leader who knew where to go. In my life however I’ve tried to not be persuaded so much by other people or following the crowd and in a way I’m proud of this. In the text Sister Louise says “you'll never amount to anything if you can be so easily influenced.” I think what she has said here is somewhat exaggerated but nonetheless true. There are those in society who have done wrong and made mistakes due to the fact they were influenced by the people around them to do the wrong thing. Drug addicts and members of gangs are examples of those in society who’ve made the wrong choice in being influence to easily and being a follower.
I think there are a time when being led isn’t such a bad thing, people leaders. But people should know to not be easily influenced into doing wrong. I know I’d much rather being a leader than a follower.

Sister Louise states "I know what came over you. You decided to become a sheep for the day, Josephine. You weren't a leader. You were a follower. You'll never amount to anything if you can be so easily influenced." Sister Louise is referring to a shepherd and his flock of sheep. For the day, she wasn’t the leader, the shepherd; she was the sheep, following the leader. This applies to my own life because sometimes, I am a leader and sometimes, I’m a follower.

She and her friends jigged the walk-a-thon to try and see a celebrity named Trey Hancock at the Sebel Town House. She was called a sheep because she decided to do what her friends did, doing something that she wasn’t suppose to do. If she had rejected and told her friends that they shouldn’t be doing that, she would have been a leader instead of a follower.

In my family life, I disagree with Lee's response because life is all about hardwork and choices. Even if your dad's a dustman, you could be something different. E.g. If you study hard while in school you can go to university and jobs that you like most.

What Lee states is a strong disagreement from me.Your life is what you are.So if you have interest in fixing stuff you might end as a engineer not something from your family.Family business only matters if they support you all the way through and having you to be there 24/7 for them.If your parents are poor doesn't mean your going to be rich in the future. Many famous people have turn different from their parents in life and big examples are Pele who came from a poor family later in the future became a rich soccer superstar so as many other actors.Your life is different to your parents, you were born on different days to your parents and you have your own state of mind.

Sister Louise was referring to Josephine on how she got talked out of taking care of the year 7s in the school walkathon, and how she was a follower for a day following Sera.

Lee’s statement doesn’t appeal anything to me nor means any significance, because it is called ‘your destiny’ and whatever you do is for you, not for anyone else but you. It’s what you want to get your of life and how you’ll use it every single day; this is in reference to a career, relationship or future plans etc.... Just because you may be rich and meet other rich people it doesn’t mean you’re going to adopt the same personality and way of living. If your dad is a doctor it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to also be a doctor; it’s your interest and your life and all you can do it achieve what you want.

Sister Louise is referring to a Shepherd and his flock of sheep; what she is trying to indicate is that Josephine is getting influenced and following that person (following the person who acts like the shepherd and she as the sheep) that most likely be a negative situation. This does apply to my life because I act like a leader when I am certain in a key-area that other will not be familiar with so come to me making me a shepherd type of person. Sometimes I am one of those people who get lost and go to someone else for help in a situation and I abide by them making me a sheeplike follower.
